Women in Islam

Hi Everyone!!

Assalamu Alaikum(May Peace Be Upon You)

Approximately, 1500 years ago , this was how society in Makkah was before Islam : a tribal rule with slavery.

The rich tribal society had slaves. The slaves had absolutely no rights. Torture of slaves was seen on the streets on a daily basis and no one had a say. The master could treat his slave however he pleased. Poor men and women were bought and sold like commodities.

Killing, Murder and Vengeance happened in broad daylight with no justice system whatsoever.

Women had no rights and the men could have as many as 15-20 wives (as many wives as they pleased). The wives were the property of men and they were treated like cattle.

Newborn baby girls were buried alive and their father’s would bury their head in grief if a baby girl was born.

This was Makkah before Islam. Actually it was much worse.

When Islam came to Makkah it was like ignorance and darkness had been lifted.

God’s reward was mentioned in the Qur’an if slaves were freed. The rich companions of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) bought slaves and freed them. The first mu’azzin (caller to prayer) was a black freed slave by the name of Bilal(r.a). He was freed by Abu Bakr(r.a) the closest friend of Prophet Muhammed(pbuh).

Lots of women converted to Islam. Islam gave women the most supreme of rights. Burying of baby girls was strictly forbidden. The Prophet(pbuh) said that whoever has a baby girl and has looked after her well will attain paradise. He said ‘Paradise lies under the feet of the mother’ and it is the duty of every child to look after their parents when they reach old age.

Under Islam, women could accept/reject any marriage proposal. They could own property and businesses. They could work and earn and their husband has no right over their property or income. But, the wife has a right over the husband’s property and income.

In Islam, the men are the protectors and maintainers of women. It is the right of the father to look after and provide for his daughter till she gets married and after marriage it is the duty of the husband to look after her needs and provide for her.

Women are protected in Islam. If she does not have a father or husband the Muslim state and society should look after her. On no account is there need for her to humiliate/disgrace herself to earn money.

There are many more things Islam did for societies. As a Muslim woman myself, I am truly blessed and happy.

I wrote this blog because there are sooo many misconceptions about Islam and Muslim women.

If you have an queries, please comment, I will be more that happy to reply.
